Book Project:
Christel Hoffmann

Christel Hoffmann – an influential thinker, doer and networker in children’s and youth theatre in Germany. In the 1960s, she was head dramaturge at Theater der Freundschaft (today: Theater an der Parkaue) in Berlin and co-founded the international children’s and youth theatre association ASSITEJ in 1966. In 2017, she received the ASSITEJ Lifetime Achievement Award. She holds teaching positions at several universities and higher education institutions in German-speaking countries.

Christel Hoffmann has written groundbreaking articles and books that were formative for the concept of humanity and the understanding of theatre in today’s children’s and youth theatre. Only a few of her writings have so far been translated from German into other languages.

At “hellwach”, the English translations of texts accumulated during Christel Hoffmann’s many years of practical experience will be featured for the first time. In conversation with Barbara Kölling, she discusses her exploration of dramaturgy and the search for the essential in theatre for young audiences.
