“The Tempest” by Shakespeare

Year 11 Literature Course

In William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, the exiled Duchess Prospera uses her magic to conjure up a violent storm, driving the ship of her treacherous sister Antonia onto a desert island. There she lives with her daughter Miranda and the air spirit Ariel, who hopes for the freedom he has been promised. Whilst the shipwrecked survivors wander aimlessly and hatch new schemes, Miranda and Ferdinand fall in love. Prospera puts their love to the test and, at the same time, confronts her enemies with their guilt. Ultimately, she chooses forgiveness and renounces her magical powers – yet as the journey home approaches, it remains uncertain whether all conflicts have truly been resolved, for there is also Caliban, the island’s sole native, and the two inscrutable figures, Stephano and Trinculo. They have their very own (revenge) plans!

The literature class at Beisenkamp Gymnasium presents the opening scenes from the play.
